Service Description

Winter Survival & Bushcraft Theatre of the Senses teaches, in association with Arukah Bushcraft, both traditional and modern wilderness skills. The course consists of nine 2-hour workshops at Old Trafford Wellbeing Centre and a four-hour workshop at the Arukah Site, a woodland area near Ashton-Under-Lyne. The course will begin on 17th October, 2024 at 11.00am, and is open only to Theatre of the Senses members. To become a member, please bring your one-year membership payment of £30.00 in the form of cash, cheque or postal order on the first day of the course. Membership of Theatre of the Senses will also entitle you to participate in any and all of our regular workshops in drama, yoga, arts and craft, and meditation, as well as one free community meal and trips to the theatre and on the canal. Please wear clothing that is appropriate to the outdoor conditions on the day of the event, and especially footwear that is stout and comfortable. Sessions will include instruction and training in bushcraft skills and provide basic hands-on experience. You will learn Correct clothing, shelter building, kindling and lighting fires (using matches or by friction, using flint and steel to create sparks, ), fire lighting in cold conditions, wild food and foraging, how to move safety on ice, how to make a snow trench, using tools (axe, knife and saw), avoidance and management of cold injuries, identifying flora and fauna and using plants, hygiene routines, water acquisition, emergency signalling, and how to choose survival equipment. Course leader Shaun, the founder and a director of Theatre of the Senses CIC, will work in association with Liz from Arukah Bushcraft. Both are seasoned bushcraft facilitators and teach both modern and traditional skills. Please note that for the final session we will be travelling as a group from Old Trafford Wellbeing Centre to the Arukah Site. Members with their own transport may prefer to make their own way there.
